My client is seeking a Principal / Senior Fire Engineer to support with signing off various fire safety systems, with experience within the rail sector, to support them on a contract basis for the up and coming months.

The role is to support the Project Representative’ (PR) and their team in delivering Authority to Use (AtU) using the Crossrail ‘mirror’ process to LUL S1088.

Roles and responsibilities to include:

• A proven track-record of assuring fire protection assets in accordance with LUL standards (particularly in accordance with S 1088);
• The ability to work within a team of fire engineers, acting both collaboratively and independently;
• Familiarity with the relevant Crossrail technical requirements, the relevant LUL standards, British / European standards and other good industry practice applicable to the assets that they are assuring;
• Acting on behalf of the PR and undertake any activities they deem necessary to enable the PR to ‘sign off’ that part of the AtU relevant to the fire protection-related assets under their overview; including, but not limited, to the following fire assets:
- Platform fire mains;
- Tunnel fire mains;
- Low pressure water mist systems;
- High pressure hydra mist systems;
- Gaseous extinguishing systems;
- Fire detection and alarm installations;
- Fire rated ductwork;
- Fire/smoke dampers;
- Stair pressurisation systems;
- Platform smoke extract systems;
- Fire rated compartmentation;
- Service penetration sleeving/fire stopping;
- Cavity barriers;
- Emergency lighting and fire signage; and
- Hand held fire-fighting appliances.
• Ensuring that all fire protection assets have been subjected to the relevant engineering assurance processes, and to confirm that those processes are complete before an application for ATU is made;
• Undertaking a reasonable amount of site-based inspection and audit activity at key stages in the installation, commissioning and completion of the assets, to verify that those systems will be able to function safely prior to AtU being applied for;
• The ability to identify interface issues with fire protection assets other than those which they are assuring; and the capability and inclination to liaise with any verifiers / assurers of those assets to ensure that integration has been undertaken effectively and safely;
• Maintaining a reasonable degree of independence from the project delivery work-stream (to enable safety-related decisions to be taken impartially);
• The ability to identify where concessions against any of the LUL fire engineering standards are necessary, and to verify that those concessions have been granted before the works are incorporated in an operating railway environment (e.g. when hoardings are removed). Materials concessions (1-085) are a good example, as is the non-compliant water mist system. Their role would not be to draft the concessions, but to identify where they are necessary and to ensure that they had been granted prior to ATU;

Qualifications:

• Bachelor’s degree in a fire safety engineering related subject.
• Membership of Institute of Fire Engineers (or similar) – AIFireE or above - is desirable.
